The Howling: Weeks of Mon, May 6 to Sun, Jun 2

Writer's picture: John ByeJohn Bye

Over the last couple weeks, we had two BIG weekends of racing with some more great performances.  I held off on sending as due to the historic (nearly a 1/3 of the field) DNF rate at IronMan 70.3 Morrow Bay in California a couple weeks ago causing the VERY READY Nat "The Avatar" Pitts to be pulled from the treadmill-like current that got progressively worse depending on where you lined up in the swim corral.  Nat had intentions on qualifying for 70.3 Worlds on a course well built for her, but after spending 1:08 swimming in basically an Endless Pool, she got pulled.  Situations like that can be mentally devastating and her rebound at Colorado Sprint Tri in Boulder (where she lined up against Gwen Jorgenson) would be indicative of her resilience...  Dum dum dummmmm...

Also, cc'd some folks I have Yelps out for.

HOWLS

Howl out to Matt "Jiffy" Lubiak who took home 3rd M50-54 at the Jerseyman Half-Lite Triathlon!  This was Matt's FIRST EVER podium performance and credit him to the work that he's put in to better his swim and build capability on the bike.  Of note, was his closing 6:51 pace 10K (4th fastest in the field), but not for the pace itself, but coming off of the hardest he has ever ridden a bike and knocking that down!  Matt is one of those folks who, like many, are looking to tap into their inner-fury on the bike and bring it to race day.  We are finally seeing that rage come out, and once it does, with the run he banks...  On boy!   Really happy for him as all the work he has been putting in is showing up in his performance!

Also, at Jerseyman which always has a strong field, Howl out to Andy "The Hammer" Solomon who took home 1st M50-54 and 6th overall.  Andy's The Hammer nickname is because he shows up at races!  Get ready to LOAD IT UP for Happy Valley 70.3!

Howl out to Thomas "The Swede" Andreasson who raced his SECOND EVER triathlon at the Lou Fusz St Louis Sprint Triathlon where he, unlike his first triathlon ever last summer where he rode the bike course twice, he placed second M55-59 (just minutes from winning) which, as this race was the USA Tri Missouri State Championship makes him the fastest M55-59 Sprinter in the STATE!  This was a fantastic race as this is the Swede's first year with the Wolfpack and went from not being able to run 3 miles without intermittent walks to crushing it raceday!

At Colfax Half-Marathon in Denver, Howl out to Adam "The Kaiju" Smith who PR'd with a 1:57 (8:59 pace)!  This was over a 30 second per mile over his previous PR from March on an easier course.  He put together a smart race as the final 5K is all uphill and it is a bit of a sucker race for folks who go too hard on the -0.5% grade prior to that point.  I told Adam to start picking off people on that final 5K, and Kaiju (who listened to the race strategy) passed over 200 people during that closing.  Also, at Colfax Half-Marathon, Howl out to Chris "The Wife" Kachinsky who won F50-59.

Also, Howls out to Taylor "Warrior Princess" Veranth and Conner "FarmBoy" Franke who each raced on relay teams at the Colfax Marathon.  Farm Boy thinks that they won the "Accounting Division" which I think is funny.

Howl out to Chris Kacinsky-Bye who placed 2nd F50-54 and 9th Overall at IronMan 70.3 Hawaii!  I was supposed to race, but, as many of you know, I have developed Neuropathy in my feet and, shortly after I run, my feet go painfully numb and I have to constantly stop stretch out my back to keep going, so slogging through isn't fun for me, alas, off to AquaBike and Decompression Surgery on my back ahead of me in November.

At the Karen Hornbostel Memorial Time Trial (KHMTT), Howls out to Chris who took 2nd F50-54 at KHMTT #05 and  Eric Gutknecht took 2nd M50-54 Cat 4 in the Series having placed over the 6 races: 2nd Place four times and 4th Place twice.  I won M55-59 Cat 4 in the series after taking 1st at KHMTT #07.

At Colorado Sprint Triathlon, Howls out to Eli "Lethal Weapon" Madden, Taylor "Warrior Princess" Veranth, Farm Boy, and, as mentioned, The Avatar.  This race is always crazy for the level of competition due to the folks that show up for it can be absolutely insane!

Farm Boy had his first race with his newly purchased TT bike (where he almost outbiked Gwen) and placed 2nd M25-29!

Warrior Princess took 3rd F25-29.

Then, the Avatar, who really had a great day, placed 3rd F35-39!!!!  Her 1:31 and change performance placed her 12th Overall, 11th if you take the former Olympic Gold Medalist out of the group!

Good luck at IronMan 70.3 Boulder next weekend where you get to race an extended version of the same course twice... :)

Howl out to Eric "The Butcher" Gutknecht who raced the Unbound 100 Mile Gravel race in Kansas and placed in the Top 15% of the entire field.  Not bad for someone knew to Gravel! :)

Some YELPS as well.

Yelp out to Giovanni Duran who took 3rd Overall at Jerseyman, who in M50-54 crushed the plus 50 field!

Yelp out to Luke Pfeiffer who placed 4th Overall at Colorado Sprint Tri!

And, at Unbound, Yelps out to Sid Wirtz who raced the 200 Miler but crashed just short of the finish line and had his day cut short and Jakin Wu who, another first time Graveler, knocked down the 100 Miler placing in the Top 20%.  Jakin's been coming out to the TT Stampede's with, mostly, the 50 plus crowd as part of his tune up, so glad to see how he did!

Do please keep the Wolfpack 2024 Schedule.xlsx (and Training Peaks) up to date with races and events!
